Thought for the day

When I started thinking about things I wanted to spend time doing in 2018 one of the ideas that popped up was re-reading The Bible. It's something I haven't done for a while. Anyway, I knew I didn't just want to start at Genesis and go straight through to Revelations, so I was planning to find a book or programme to follow.

And...

Just as I was thinking about it, I saw a request on Twitter asking for bloggers to take part in IBRA's #FreshStart Challenge, to follow a week's worth of readings and reflections from their 2018 Bible reading book "Fresh From The Word".

So I signed up and started on January 1st.

I made a conscious decision to make this one of the first things I do in the morning, otherwise, I knew I wouldn't do it, so after I've fed the cats and had a coffee, I open my Bible to the passage for the day.

Each day there's a reading, a meditation on the passage, a prayer and a prompt for further thought

I've not given a set amount of time to this activity, sometimes the material speaks to me more deeply than on other days.

What I have found is that having the books by my bed, so that I just reach out and pick them up, is great - no effort and having decided on a time to start each morning has made it really easy to make this practice part of my routine really quickly.

The daily thoughts, written by a variety of different Christians, from different traditions and using a variety of versions of The Bible, aren't preachy or like Bible Study, they're simply short and thought-provoking.

I'm using The Bible I've had since university and I'm constantly finding bits highlighted, underlined or marked from lectures, essays and events I've done over the years, so as well as new thoughts Fresh From The Word evokes, I'm also being transported back to events from my past.

I'm planning to keep going with the readings for the whole of 2018 and will keep you updated now and again on my progress.

If you fancy joining me, "Fresh From The Word is available here.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of "Fresh From The Word", to enable me to take part in the #FreshStart campaign.

Reasons to be cheerful - 5th October 2017

It's a quickie this week... I'm still loving my job and really glad that I made the move. I submitted two commissioned articles to editors and they were happy. I'm off on a trip, a couple of nights away (more on that next week). Hope you've had a great week too.

Reasons to be cheerful - 7th December 2017

1) After a day of sawing, drilling, cutting, etc, etc, and then a new bit in the boiler...We have gas! Yes, our heating, hot water and cooker are now working - the gas is fixed! SO happy after 12 days without it.

2) This morning Boyzilla was greeted by a dead RAT outside the sitting room. Whilst yucky (but not as yucky as if I'd had to clean it up), it makes me hugely proud that my cats are, well, cats.

3) The two planning tools I ordered for 2018 to help me move forward with my plans to do more writing have arrived and I'm looking forward to spending big chunks of the next four days exploring them and planning for a fantabulous year.
